Nigiro Rooibos with Blood Orange
A Red-Blooded Combination
Rooibos has made its rounds in terms of its popularity. It had a huge following a few years ago, when it first appeared on the market. We’ve had the South African red bush tea mixed with vanilla, chocolate, coconut and, of course, unadulterated. But until now, we never had it with blood orange. It’s a winning combination, and it recalls childhood days in winter, when Mom would mix freshly squeezed blood orange into a pot of black tea, with just a hint of honey.
This offering from Nigiro Tea in Cape Town is delicate, even after steeping it for six-plus minutes. When we asked about the ideal steeping time, we were told that "every tea has its grower, maker, and appreciator, making one of the trinities of tea," and advised to try various steeping times. We like it strong to bring out the dark fruit flavor, and we cannot resist adding a splash of freshly squeezed citrus fruit.
