Lapsang Souchong
PeLi Teas

Rating: 15/20
PeLi Teas Lapsang Souchong loose tea leaves, which are smoked over pinewood embers to impart their distinct aroma and flavor

Give your senses a kick with Lapsang Souchong. Rumored to be the world's first black tea, it was originally known as Bohea and was a favorite among Europeans during the Qing Dynasty. Produced by award-winning company PeLi Teas, the leaves of this brew are picked only during springtime in a selected area of China's Fujian region.

After being picked, their leaves are rolled, then smoked over select pinewood embers. This infuses a distinct aroma, as well as a strong—almost meaty—jolt of smoky flavor in every sip of the smooth-tasting, full-bodied brew. While this tea may not be for the faint-at-heart sippers (tea tasters have been known to immediately love it or hate it), we think it is a unique, delicious brew that is worth trying at least once.

Price: $10 for 4 oz. loose leaf tin.
